While QAM is effective and widely used to cram more data bits per second into a narrow bandwidth, it comes at a price.  A higher signal to noise ratio is essential to avoid a high bit error rate (BER).  But the real problem is that QAM requires linear amplification if the phase-amplitude symbols are to be preserved and accurately recovered.  That means low efficiency power amplifiers (PAs) that use more power and generate more heat.  Despite these disadvantages, QAM is the modulation of choice in wireless LANs, cell phones, and other wireless systems especially those using OFDM.

The new modem/router combo is based on Intel’s Puma 6 processor built specifically for version 3.0 of the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, which is what enables cable TV and broadband data transfers. The chip is “flexible and high-performing,” enabling download speeds of up to 960Mbps even though the modem/router hybrid is locked to 300Mbps broadband plans.

Like all SmallHD monitors, the Cine 7 uses the same PageBuilder OS graphical user interface (GUI). SmallHD built the PageBuilder OS to make menus less confusing. PageBuilder is a very customizable system as it allows you to selectively apply monitoring tools such as waveform, vectorscope, multiview, LUTs, and focusing aids on different “pages”. These pages can be easily flipped by using the touchscreen capabilities.

StarLink does not exist yet, and cable’s not standing still. We may well have low-latency DOCSIS by the time it launches. 25 ms, BTW, is already considered excessive for DSL.

QAM is Quadrature Amplitude Modulation. This is a system where a symbol is encoded as a shift in both phase and amplitude of the carrier. For instance, 16QAM has four distinct phase shifts and four amplitude shifts. These are often drawn in a "constellation" that shows all possible combinations.

Up top sits an OLED display, which shows visual feedback for the current parameter – preset names, waveshape changes when tweaking oscillator settings, filter sweeps, envelope/LFO curves, etc. This real-time visualisation is both useful and aesthetically pleasing, and greatly enhances the overall programming experience as you dial in settings.

The CG7500 modem/router hybrid is compatible with Comcast Xfinity and Charter Spectrum broadband services up to 300Mbps. On the wireless front, it’s also a three-stream device, although its speeds aren’t quite as robust. On the 2.4GHz end, the CG7500 reaches up to 600Mbps (3 x 200Mbps), while the 5GHz band reaches up to 1,300Mbps (3 x 433.3Mbps).

A less expensive and less data-heavy option might be to wire airplanes to emit so-called “triggered transmissions”—a system by which certain parameters are transmitted only when sensors detect something has gone awry. So if an airliner’s altitude or airspeed suddenly changes, its special transmitter automatically starts sending live data via satellite to the ground.

The Cine 7 RX looks to be a good in-between solution for people who want a wireless monitoring solution that has a larger screen and more features than a Focus 7, but don’t want to go to the expense of buying a 703 Bolt.

The external housing of the Cine 7 is made out of milled aluminum. The build quality of the Cine 7 is excellent. Everything from the battery plate to the connectors to the overall finish has been well thought out and executed.

All of the TV signals and Internet data are transmitted in a spectrum of 6-MHz wide channels. Since a coax cable has a bandwidth as wide as 850 MHz to 1 GHz, the system can accommodate from 140 to 170 downstream channels of 6 MHz each. The TV signals or Internet data are modulated on to carriers in each channel. There are also upstream channels that allow the consumer to transmit data back to the headend. This communication takes places in 6-MHz channels as well that occupy the cable spectrum from 5 MHz to 40 MHz or in some systems up to 65 MHz.

“I probably would have gone this way if it had been available when I started,” he said. “However, in the meantime, I have a lot of information about the superiority of DVB.”
