Cockpit video recorders are something the NTSB has been recommending since 2000, but the FAA has repeatedly demurred. As recently as 2016, the FAA concluded that “we have not seen any new compelling evidence to require installation of cockpit image recorders.” But it’s something McComb thinks would greatly aid investigators. “Now that you have all these glass cockpits and modern systems, it’s valuable to know not just how the systems are working but how the crew is interacting with them,” she says. “For instance, if a pilot goes into a different screen or system, it’s helpful to know what screen they were looking at when something happened. The more complex the systems, the more information we need to understand how things are working.”

These higher level FSK methods of modulation and demodulation are difficult to implement so are a general pain to use.  But CML Microcircuits now has their CMX7164 IC, a modem that includes full 2FSK, 4FSK, 8FSK and 16FSK.  It does the modulation and demodulation digitally with DSP so you never have to worry about it.  The chip supports symbol rates of 2k to 10k symbols per second.  At the full symbol rate using 16FSK you can get 40 kb/s through a 25 kHz wide channel.  The chip includes full data filtering before modulation using a root raised cosine filter with an alpha (α) of 0.2.  Sinc filtering is optional.  The interface to the system microcontroller is by way of a serial C-BUS.  The CMX7164 is still just a modem so you need to add the external transmitter and receiver circuits.  But it is now easier than ever to use higher level FSK and you can reap the benefits of non-linear PAs and higher data rates.

To make VDSL2 even faster, companies like Broadcom, Ikanos, and Lantiq are implementing VDSL2 chips with a feature called vectoring. This digital signal processing technique cancels noise and far-end crosstalk (FEXT) between bundled twisted pairs, enabling high speeds. These new chips also implement channel bonding that permits two twisted pairs to be used simultaneously to further increase speed to 200 Mbits/s downstream and 100 Mbits/s upstream. For example, the Ikanos’ Vx185-HP communications processor chipset implements VDSL2 as well as vectoring and channel bonding in a home gateway (Fig. 5).

Whether you know it or not, the most popular modulation scheme in use in the wireless world today is QAM or quadrature amplitude modulation.  It is a combination of both amplitude and phase modulation.
