Unlike the comparatively crude designs on display at the NTSB, today’s FDRs can record thousands of parameters, far more than just the 88 mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Some recorders archive voice and data in one unit, saving precious space. Most are mounted in the tail section of an airplane, which is typically the last part to make impact and is therefore most likely to survive a crash.

One traditional approach for the variable attenuator uses PIN diodes, whose RF resistance can be continuously controlled over a wide range by a DC bias current. PIN diodes are specifically intended for this problem and are available from multiple vendors at reasonable cost. The use of multiple PIN diodes can lead to an attenuator with >30-dB RF control range and good distortion and dynamic gain flatness characteristics. The alternative to PIN diodes is to use a FET as the variable resistor element. FETs are used in very high volume as switching elements, but can also be used in a continuously variable attenuator. FETs can make very consistent on/off switches with impressively low distortion; however, distortion inconsistency in the middle of their resistance range becomes a challenge for device fabricators and circuit designers. In addition, FET attenuators can struggle to simultaneously achieve both wide attenuation range and the consistent performance so critical for optical AGC. The clear advantage of FET attenuators, however, is that they offer the possibility of a lower cost, single die design.Forward thinking Simple manual approaches for gain control used in previous optical AM-VSB deployments may not suit tomorrow’s networks. An automatic gain adjustment routine promises reduced installation and maintenance costs. As fiber moves closer to the subscriber, the importance of how gain control is implemented in the ONT receiver becomes increasingly relevant in the quest for lower overall costs. A forward-thinking AGC approach that accommodates a growing optical input range as well as analog and digital content types will help operators benefit from their FTTH investment over a longer time horizon. Between tight margins and an ocean of new arrivals, it’s going to be pretty hard for the cable industry to make anywhere near the same profits they were used to during the heyday of cable TV. But that’s generally how competition works. And you shouldn’t feel too badly for the Comcasts of the world, since their solution will simply be to jack up the cost of broadband, where competition is far weaker. Still, there’s a subset of executives who still seem to somehow believe they’re owed a permanent position of dominance without having to work for it. That delusion is falling apart more quickly than most of them expected.

Upstream modulation is quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) or one of several variations of 16/32/64/128QAM. Upstream rates are typically less than 27 Mbits/s.

One version uses the UTP cable bandwidth out to 8.832 MHz with 2048 subcarriers to achieve a maximum rate of 50 Mbits/s. Other versions use 12, 17, or 30 MHz of bandwidth. With the 17-MHz bandwdith and 4096 subcarriers, the maximum possible data rate is 100 Mbits/s. Another version uses 30 MHz of bandwidth with 3479 subchannels that are 8.625 kHz wide instead of the usual 4.3125 kHz. Maximum data rate is 200 Mbits/s. The range is usually restricted to 1000 to 3000 feet.  Unlike cable TV connections, DSL gives the full speed to each user.

The market is largely fragmented and the vast majority of the players functioning in the global Delta-sigma Modulator market are taking steps to raise their market footprint, by concentrating on product diversification and development, therefore making them seize a larger share of the market.
