This spectrum analyzer output display shows the 128 QAM channels output generated by the MAX5882 and MAX5880 combination. The full bandwidth is 1 GHz with a center frequency of 525 MHz. The resolution bandwidth is 1 MHz. You can just make out the 6-MHz channels, 16 per 100-MHz segment.

Lets look at it from the time perspective, and say that for any program you watch, it takes 1 hour a week. Even watching 24 hours a day, you will only watch 168 programs and get value from a maximum of 168 channels. Realistically in those bundles, people watch programs on fewer than 10 of those channels. Those bundles are trying to dazzle with numbers, rather than describe something that is actually valuable.

In the last year or so we have started to see some very good 5″ and 7″ monitors starting to appear. I recently reviewed the Atomos Ninja V and was very impressed by the screen quality and the accurate colors. I’m hoping the SmallHD Cine 7 will be even better.

Neat idea, and fun implementation, but hardly new. Around 1980 our company was supplying backend (radio) communications support for an Israeli company (whose name escapes me) that did this for irrigation equipment: They used a single pair of wires, carrying low voltage AC power to control valves, read sensors and various similar SCADA tasks, over farm-size territory.
